Overview

Lepakshi is a small heritage village in Anantapur district famous for the Veerabhadra Temple, a 16th-century Vijayanagara masterpiece featuring some of the largest and finest mural paintings of the medieval Deccan. The temple is renowned for its hanging pillar — one of 70 pillars in the hall, it does not fully rest on the ground and a thin sheet of paper can be passed beneath it. A massive Nandi bull carved from a single granite boulder, measuring 4.5 metres high and 8.2 metres long, sits about 200 metres from the temple and is one of the largest monolithic Nandi statues in India. Situated 920 km from Mumbai, the journey to Lepakshi via NH 44 via Hyderabad → Anantapur → Lepakshi (15 km off NH 44) takes roughly 14-16 hours and is one of the most popular outstation routes from the city. History & Significance

Lepakshi's Veerabhadra Temple was built in 1538 CE by Virupanna Nayaka, a governor under the Vijayanagara Empire. Legend says the name 'Lepakshi' derives from Lord Rama's words 'Le Pakshi' (rise, bird) to the wounded Jatayu bird from the Ramayana. The temple's unfinished Kalyana Mandapam and Virupanna's tragic story of self-blinding add to its mythological aura.
