Overview

Chikmagalur is coffee country in Karnataka's Western Ghats, around 700 km from Mumbai and a long 12-hour drive south. The hills here are covered in coffee estates, and the air is cool and green for much of the year. People come for the plantation stays, the trek up Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, and a slower pace among the misty slopes. It's a proper getaway, not a quick one.

History & Significance

Chikmagalur is where coffee cultivation in India is said to have begun, with the legend that the saint Baba Budan brought seven coffee beans from Yemen and planted them in these hills in the seventeenth century. The slopes have grown coffee ever since, and the region remains one of the country's main producing areas. Lying in the Western Ghats, it combines those working plantations with high peaks and forest, which is what draws travellers seeking the hills.

Route Highlights

  • This is a 12-hour run, so we plan an overnight halt on the way down, usually around the Hubli or Davangere side, rather than driving it in one go.
  • Once you're in the Chikmagalur hills the roads to the estates and viewpoints get narrow and winding, a careful local-savvy driver helps.
  • Mullayanagiri is the highest point in Karnataka, the drive up most of the way is doable, with a short climb at the top.
  • Coffee estate homestays are the typical accommodation, and many offer plantation walks, book ahead in season.
  • Post-monsoon, September to February, the hills are greenest and the weather is at its best.
  • Distances between the viewpoints, waterfalls and estates are real, so you'll spend a fair bit of time driving within the region too.

Places to Visit in Chikmagalur

Mullayanagiri Peak

Karnataka's highest point at around 1,930 metres, with a small temple at the top. The road takes you most of the way; a short, steep walk finishes the climb. Views over the ranges on a clear day are excellent.

Baba Budangiri

A ridge of hills and a revered dargah-temple shrine, with caves and viewpoints along the way. The drive up is scenic and the area is tied to the legend of how coffee first came to India.

Hebbe and Kalhatti Falls

Waterfalls set among the coffee and forest, fullest after the monsoon. Hebbe usually needs a jeep ride through estate land for the last stretch.

Coffee Estates and Plantation Walks

The defining experience here, staying on or visiting a working coffee estate and walking the rows with someone who explains the harvest and process.

Hirekolale Lake

A calm lake ringed by hills a short drive from town, good for an unhurried evening stop. Popular around sunset for the reflections on the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a long one at around 12 hours, so we don't recommend doing it straight through. We break it with a night halt en route. Some customers prefer to fly to Mangalore or Bangalore and cab from there.
September to February, after the rains, when the hills are green and the air is cool. The coffee blossom around the first rains is also a nice time, though brief and weather-dependent.
Most of the way, yes. The road goes near the top and then there's a short, fairly steep walk with steps to the summit temple. Reasonable for most fitness levels.
Given the distance, at least four to five days if driving from Mumbai. The estates, peaks, falls and lakes are spread out, and you'll want a couple of unhurried days in the hills.
The main roads are fine. Some estate and waterfall approaches are narrow, rough or need a jeep for the final bit. For those we'd suggest an SUV or arranging the local jeep on the spot.
