Overview
Coorg, or Kodagu, sits in Karnataka's Western Ghats about 700 km from Mumbai, roughly 12 hours of driving with the last stretch climbing into coffee country. People go for the cool weather, the plantations and the green hills, not for monuments. Honeymooners and family groups are most of who we drive here, usually for a relaxed three or four days.
NH 48 via Bangalore and Mysore KarnatakaHistory & Significance
Kodagu, anglicised as Coorg, was historically ruled by the Haleri dynasty of Kodava rajas from the 17th century until the British annexed it in 1834. The Kodava community that gave the region its character has its own distinct customs and a strong martial tradition. Coffee was introduced under colonial encouragement and went on to define the local economy, which is why the hills are still carpeted with plantations today.

Route Highlights
- The run down is long, and the final approach winds up through the Ghats into Madikeri, the main hill town. Curvy roads near the end.
- Coorg is spread out, the homestays and resorts are often deep inside plantation areas down narrow estate roads.
- It's misty and can rain even outside the monsoon. Roads stay slick, our drivers take the hill sections easy.
- This is a drive-and-relax destination. Sights are scattered, so a car you keep with you beats local transport here.
- Monsoon makes it lush but landslide-prone on some Ghat roads. We watch conditions and may adjust the route.
- Coorg pairs well with Mysore, which is about 120 km away, if you want to combine a city and the hills.
Places to Visit in Coorg (Kodagu)
Abbey Falls
A waterfall set in coffee and spice plantations near Madikeri, reached by a short walk and a hanging bridge. Fuller and louder in and just after the monsoon, thinner in dry months.
Raja's Seat
A garden viewpoint in Madikeri where the old kings reportedly watched the sunset. Easy, central, and the evening view over the valleys is the draw. Gets busy at sundown.
Dubare Elephant Camp
A riverside camp where you can see and interact with elephants, reached by a boat or coracle crossing. Good for families, but go in the morning when the activities run.
Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple)
At Bylakuppe, a large Tibetan Buddhist monastery with golden statues, about an hour from Madikeri. Quiet, photogenic and a different kind of stop from the plantation sights.
Talacauvery
The source of the river Cauvery, a pilgrimage spot high up with a small temple and a steep flight of steps to a viewpoint. The drive up is scenic but the road is narrow.
