Overview
Pune lies 148 km southeast of Mumbai on the six-lane Yashwantrao Chavan Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the first access-controlled expressway built in India (opened 2002). A clean run takes 2.5 to 3 hours by AC Sedan from Mumbai International Airport, with two major toll plazas (Khalapur and Talegaon) totalling around 360 rupees one-way. The expressway climbs through the Western Ghats over the Bhor Ghat tunnels — six tunnels totalling 5.8 km that bypass the older Khandala-Lonavala loop — and descends into the Maval valley before reaching Pune at Dehu Road. Cabs commonly drop at four zones: the airport (PNQ), Hinjewadi IT park, Koregaon Park / Camp area, and Kothrud / Karve Road for academic / west Pune destinations. Friday evenings (5-9 PM Mumbai-bound) and Sunday evenings (4-9 PM Pune-bound) are the heaviest traffic windows — adding 60-90 minutes; Monday-Thursday mid-day is fastest. The expressway has dedicated breakdown patrols, ambulance posts every 25 km, and Food Mall / McDonald's at Khalapur and Lonavala for halts. The older NH 48 (formerly NH 4) is still drivable and goes via Panvel-Khopoli-Khandala but takes 4-4.5 hours. Pune is Maharashtra's cultural and education capital — home to the IUCAA, NCL, Symbiosis and FLAME universities, the Aga Khan Palace where Mahatma Gandhi was interned, the Shaniwar Wada Peshwa fortress, and OSHO International Meditation Resort in Koregaon Park.
Mumbai–Pune Expressway (NH 48) via Khopoli & Khandala Ghats MaharashtraHistory & Significance
Pune served as the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Confederacy from the early 18th century, earning it the title 'Queen of the Deccan.' The city's strategic importance continued under British rule, when it served as the seasonal capital of the Bombay Presidency, leaving behind a rich legacy of colonial bungalows, cantonment areas, and institutions. The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent. Over the years, various dynasties and rulers have left their mark on Pune, contributing to its rich architectural and cultural heritage that visitors can still appreciate today.
