Overview

Shirdi sits 240 km east of Mumbai in Ahmednagar district and is the seat of the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust — one of the wealthiest temple bodies in India, handling more than 60,000 darshan visitors on an average day and considerably more during Ram Navami, Guru Purnima and Vijayadashami. The road from Mumbai uses the Mumbai-Nashik Expressway (NH 160) up to Bhiwandi, then NH 61 east through Kasara Ghat, Nashik, Sinnar and Kopargaon, finally crossing the Godavari river bridge into Shirdi town. Most Mumbai cabs leave between 11 PM and 4 AM so that pilgrims can arrive in time for the 4:30 AM Kakad Aarti, take darshan, and be back in Mumbai by late evening — Miles Tours dispatches dedicated overnight pickups for this exact pattern. The drive is largely flat, four-laned and well-lit, with the steepest section being Kasara Ghat (around 90 minutes from Mumbai). Plan for two food halts: a Maharashtrian thali at Kamat Restaurant near Igatpuri on the outbound leg, and Hotel Saikrupa or MTDC just outside the temple zone on return. Parking is restricted within the 1.5 km Sansthan zone, so cabs typically drop passengers at the Gate-3 / South Gate kiosk and wait at the designated paid lot behind Hotel St. Laurn. October to March offers the most pleasant weather; June-September brings heavy rain on the Kasara stretch which can extend drive time by 60-90 minutes.

History & Significance

Sai Baba arrived in Shirdi around 1858 and made his home in a dilapidated mosque he called Dwarkamai, tending a sacred fire (dhuni) that burned continuously for decades. His teachings blended Hindu and Sufi Muslim traditions and attracted followers from all communities; after his Mahasamadhi in 1918, the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust was formed and Shirdi grew into one of India's most visited pilgrimage towns.

Places to Visit in Shirdi

Samadhi Mandir

The central white-marble shrine over Sai Baba's tomb, built in 1918 by a Nagpur millionaire originally as a private wada. Open 4 AM to 11 PM; expect 90-120 minute queue in line, or 15 minutes with the paid 200 rupee 'sughama darshan' pass.

Dwarkamai

The crumbling masjid where Sai Baba lived for nearly 60 years. The dhuni (sacred fire) he lit is still burning continuously; visitors collect a pinch of the udi ash as blessing. His grinding stone, oil lamp and palanquin remain in place.

Chavadi

A two-room village hall where Sai Baba slept every alternate night. The Thursday-night palanquin procession from Dwarkamai to Chavadi remains one of the most photographed rituals at Shirdi — devotees join the half-kilometre walk.

Lendi Baug

A small garden behind Dwarkamai where Sai Baba personally tended a neem sapling that now shades the Nanda Deep oil lamp he himself lit. Quieter than the main temple — good spot for parikrama.

Shani Shingnapur (side trip)

65 km south of Shirdi, the famous open-air Shani temple where homes have no doors. Most Shirdi-Mumbai cabs combine the two on a single trip with an extra 2-hour halt for an additional 800-1000 rupee detour charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mumbai-Shirdi alone is 5-6 hours one way. Adding Shani Shingnapur (65 km / 90 minutes south of Shirdi) makes it roughly 12-13 hours round-trip from Mumbai if you do both in one day. We recommend a Mumbai-Shirdi-Shani-Mumbai package overnight: leave Mumbai 11 PM, darshan at Shirdi by 5 AM, Shani by 9 AM, back to Mumbai by 4-5 PM.
Yes. Standard Miles Tours practice for Shirdi trips is the driver waits at the designated parking lot near Hotel St. Laurn (15-minute walk from Samadhi Mandir). No extra charge for up to 4 hours; longer halts are 100 rupees per extra hour. Driver also has a rest-and-bath facility there.
Drop-off is at Gate-3 / South Gate of the Sansthan, the closest legal point for outside vehicles. From there it is a 200-metre walk to the Samadhi Mandir queue complex. Disabled passengers can request drop at Gate-1 (VIP entry) — call us 30 minutes before reaching town.
Yes. NH 160 and NH 61 are well-lit four-lane corridors with regular toll plazas, fuel stations and dhabas open 24 hours. Most Sai pilgrim cabs travel overnight; our drivers are familiar with the route and rotate breaks at recognised stops near Padgha, Igatpuri and Sinnar.
Vehicle, fuel, driver and the standard 15% one-way discount. Tolls (around 800 rupees both ways including Vashi Bridge, Padgha, Mumbai-Nashik Expressway and Kopargaon plaza) and Sansthan parking (40 rupees) are paid at actuals. No state permit is needed since the route stays inside Maharashtra.
