Kundalika River Rafting in Kolad, Maharashtra Kolad — popular tourist destination in Maharashtra Tamhini Ghat in Kolad Scenic view of Kolad, Maharashtra Sutarwadi Pali Ashtavinayak Ganpati — Mumbai to Kolad trip

Overview

Kolad is a small town on the Kundalika river in Raigad district, 120 km south of Mumbai on NH 66 (Mumbai-Goa Coastal Highway). It is India's premier white-water river rafting destination — the Kundalika is the only river in western India where commercial rafting operates year-round, fed by the Bhira hydropower station's controlled water release (Tata Power releases water daily 7-9 AM and 1-3 PM, creating predictable 12-14 km rafting runs with Grade 2-3 rapids). The drive from Mumbai takes 2.5 to 3 hours by AC Sedan, mostly on the four-lane NH 66 with a short 8 km diversion at Indapur to reach the rafting put-in point at Kolad village. Most Mumbai weekend rafting packages run as same-day round trips: leave Mumbai 5 AM, rafting 8 AM, lunch at the Kolad camp, return Mumbai 6 PM. Beyond rafting, Kolad has overnight tent-camping operators (Foliage Outdoors, Vihang River Camp, Splash Mountain) offering tented stays with bonfire, kayaking and rappelling. The Sutarwadi-Pali Ashtavinayak Ganesh shrine (one of the 8 sacred Ganesh temples of Maharashtra), the Tamhini Ghat waterfalls (40 km east, peak monsoon), Janjira Sea Fort at Murud (75 km southwest, an unconquered 1490 sea fort) and the Dheku Falls and Ghosala Fort make for a 2-day Kolad+Konkan circuit. Best rafting season is June-December when monsoon and post-monsoon water levels stay high.

History & Significance

Kolad's rafting industry began in the 1990s when adventure tourism operators recognised the Kundalika River's potential; the Bhira Dam's regulated water releases created reliable rafting conditions year-round. The surrounding region was historically part of the Bijapuri Adil Shahi territories and later came under Shivaji's Maratha kingdom; several hill forts within 20 km were part of the coastal defence chain protecting the Konkan coast.

Places to Visit in Kolad

Kundalika River Rafting

India's only year-round commercial white-water rafting (most other Indian rivers are seasonal). The 12-14 km run starts at the Kolad village put-in and ends at Sutarwadi, with 14 Grade 2-3 rapids. Two daily slots aligned with the Tata Power Bhira dam release.

Tamhini Ghat

A 25 km Sahyadri descent on the Pune-Mulshi-Mangaon road, 40 km east of Kolad, famous for 15+ monsoon waterfalls along a single 12 km stretch. Peak season is July-September. Pune-side Pune-Mumbai through-traffic uses this as an alternate to NH 48.

Sutarwadi Pali Ashtavinayak Ganpati

The 1640 Ballaleshwar Ganesh temple at Pali, 35 km from Kolad — one of the eight 'Ashtavinayak' Ganesh shrines of Maharashtra. Easily combined with rafting as a half-day add-on. Best darshan early morning.

Sudhagad Fort

A 17th-century Maratha hill fort at 620 m, 25 km from Kolad. Two-hour trek to the summit; the Bhorai Devi temple and old stone water tanks at the top are intact. Easy trek, suitable for beginners.

Murud Janjira Sea Fort

A 1490 Siddi (Habshi) sea-fort 75 km southwest of Kolad, on a rocky outcrop 500 m off Murud beach. Considered 'unconquered' through 350 years of Maratha, Portuguese and British attacks. Accessed by 15-minute boat ride from Rajapuri jetty (40 rupees per head).

Frequently Asked Questions

1,200-1,800 rupees per person for the standard 12 km run, including raft, paddles, life-jacket, safety guide and post-rafting breakfast. Camping packages with overnight tent stay are 2,500-4,500 rupees per head including all meals.
Yes. The Kundalika rapids are Grade 2-3 (intermediate) — challenging but not extreme. All commercial operators carry trained river guides (typically one per raft of 6 paddlers), life-jackets and helmets. Most weekend rafters are first-timers.
Yes, this is the most common itinerary. Mumbai (5 AM) → Kolad camp (8 AM) → Rafting & breakfast (8:30 AM-11 AM) → Pali Ganpati or short trek (12-3 PM) → Mumbai (6-7 PM). Standard 12-hour outstation cab covers this.
Yes — monsoon is actually peak season (June-September), when high natural water-flow and dam release coincide. Tata Power schedules longer release windows in monsoon. Rapids become more challenging (Grade 3+ on heavy-flow days).
No. Kolad is in Raigad district, Maharashtra. The route stays inside the state — no permit fee. Only standard tolls apply (Vashi Bridge, Panvel, Indapur — total around 250 rupees one-way).
