Overview

Mount Abu is Rajasthan's only proper hill station, about 770 km from Mumbai and roughly 11 hours up NH48 through Gujarat, then the climb from Abu Road. People go for the cooler air, the Dilwara Jain temples and Nakki Lake. We get a steady mix of families, Jain pilgrim groups and Gujarati weekend crowds on this route.

History & Significance

Mount Abu has been a place of religious importance for a very long time, tied to Hindu and Jain traditions both. Its best-known monuments, the Dilwara temples, were built by Chalukya-era ministers between the 11th and 13th centuries and are celebrated for their marble carving. Under the British, the hill became the summer headquarters for Rajputana's administration, which is part of why it developed as a hill station while the rest of Rajasthan stayed desert.

Route Highlights

  • The last stretch is a real ghat climb of about 28 km from Abu Road up to the town. Curvy, so a few passengers feel it.
  • Approach through Gujarat is fast highway until you near Palanpur, then you turn off for the hill.
  • Being the closest hill station for a lot of western India, it gets crowded on weekends and holidays. Weekday visits are calmer.
  • Dilwara temples have strict timings for general visitors and a no-photography, no-leather rule. We brief passengers before drop-off.
  • Nakki Lake area is the town centre, walkable, with boating and the evening market. Parking nearby is tight on busy days.
  • It actually gets cold here in winter, can dip near freezing at night. Carry warm layers, people underestimate this.

Places to Visit in Mount Abu

Dilwara Jain Temples

Five marble temples from the 11th-13th centuries with carving so fine it's hard to believe it's stone. Open to non-Jains only in restricted afternoon hours, and photography is not allowed inside.

Nakki Lake

The town's central lake, with pedal boats and a walking path around it. Toad Rock at one end is the spot kids climb for photos. Easy, central, do it in the evening.

Sunset Point

Exactly what it says, a viewpoint for the evening sun over the plains. It gets very busy and there's a short walk or a push-cart ride from the parking.

Guru Shikhar

The highest peak in the Aravallis at around 1722 metres, with a small temple at the top. The drive up is good and the view on a clear day stretches a long way.

Achalgarh Fort

An old fort with the Achaleshwar Mahadev temple nearby. Quieter than the main sights, a decent stop if you have time and like the historical angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's a proper hill climb of about 28 km from Abu Road with plenty of bends. The surface is good and well-maintained. If anyone in the car gets carsick easily, keep that section slow and carry the usual tablets.
You can see the main spots in a full day, but it's tight. A night there is much better so you can do Dilwara in the afternoon window and catch sunset without rushing.
Pleasant most of the year because of the altitude. Summer is the peak season since it's the cool escape, and winter nights get genuinely cold. Monsoon turns it green but the ghat can be foggy.
For general tourists, no. Non-Jain visitors are allowed only during set afternoon hours, and there's no photography inside. We tell passengers the timing so they don't reach there too early.
Yes, all the main points like Guru Shikhar and Sunset Point are drivable and included in local sightseeing. Some final approaches, like the last bit to a viewpoint, are short walks.
