Overview

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia clan after the older Mewar capital at Chittorgarh became hard to defend. The city was planned around Lake Pichola, and successive Maharanas built the palaces and lake structures over the following centuries. It stayed the seat of the Mewar royal house, and much of the old architecture you see today dates from that long period of Sisodia rule.

Route Highlights
- The Gujarat stretch from Vapi up to Ahmedabad on NH48 is fast, six-lane, well-lit at the toll plazas. Good time to make up hours.
- We usually break at one of the Hindustan/highway dhabas around Bharuch or Anand for breakfast. Clean washrooms, decent thalis.
- After Shamlaji the road into Rajasthan gets more rolling. Not bad, just slower, so don't plan to do the whole thing flat-out.
- Udaipur itself is hilly and the old city lanes near Jagdish Temple are tight. Our drivers park outside and you walk in.
- If you're doing Udaipur plus Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur, tell us upfront. Those are separate day-runs and the ghats eat time.
- Summer here is brutal heat. October to March is when most passengers we drive actually enjoy the rooftop cafes.
Places to Visit in Udaipur
City Palace
The big riverside palace complex on Pichola. Allow at least two hours, it's a long walk-through with the museum, and ticketing has a separate camera charge.
Lake Pichola
The boat ride from Rameshwar Ghat is the standard thing to do, sunset slot fills up fast. Jag Mandir is the island stop on the longer ticket.
Fateh Sagar Lake
Quieter than Pichola, locals come here in the evening. The lakeside road is a nice slow drive and there are stalls for snacks.
Jagdish Temple
Right in the old city, an Indo-Aryan style Vishnu temple with carved steps. It's a short stop, ten minutes, but the carvings are worth a look.
Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace)
On a hilltop above the city, mainly for the view at sunset. It's inside a wildlife sanctuary so there's an entry gate and a separate vehicle charge.
