Overview
Lonavala is the closest Mumbai weekend hill station — 83 km on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, reached in about 90 minutes door-to-door including the Khalapur toll. The town sits at 624 metres on the Sahyadri crest between the Bhor and Tamhini ghats, and along with adjacent Khandala (just 5 km west) covers some 38 km² of high plateau. The two hill stations are siblings: Khandala is the original 1860s British 'sanitarium' with stately bungalows and the famous Duke's Nose viewpoint; Lonavala expanded in the 1980s with budget hotels, weekend villas and the chikki (peanut-jaggery brittle) market that has become its trademark — Cooper's, Maganlal and A1 are the three big chikki brands all clustered on the old Pune-Mumbai road through town. Tiger's Leap (a cliff 650 m above the Konkan plain on the Aamby Valley road), Bhushi Dam (a 12-metre stepped masonry dam that overflows spectacularly in monsoon), and Karla and Bhaja Caves (2nd century BCE Buddhist rock-cut temples 12 km north) are the most-visited attractions. Adjacent INS Shivaji (Indian Navy training academy), Ekvira temple at Karla, and Lohagad / Visapur forts give Lonavala a year-round mix of pilgrim, naval, and trekker visitors. Best season is July-September for waterfalls and monsoon greenery; October-February for cool dry weather and views; March-May the plateau gets hot enough that most travellers drive past to Mahabaleshwar instead.

Places to Visit in Lonavala
Tiger's Leap
A cliff on the Aamby Valley road named for its tiger-paw shape on the map. The drop is 650 m straight down to the Konkan plain with a clear view of Sahyadri ridges to the south. Best in monsoon when valley mist rises up to the cliff edge.
Bhushi Dam
A 12-metre stepped masonry dam built 1860s for the GIPR railway. In July-September the spillway overflows down a 250-metre staircase that becomes a public bathing zone — extremely crowded weekends and traffic-restricted by police. Daytime only.
Karla Buddhist Caves
A set of 16 Hinayana caves carved 2nd century BCE, including Cave 8 with its 14-metre-high chaitya hall and 37 octagonal stone pillars topped with elephant and rider sculptures. Considered the finest example of early Buddhist rock-cut architecture in India. Combined with the Ekvira goddess temple at the cave entrance.
Lohagad Fort
A Maratha hill-fort at 1,033 m, 12 km south of Lonavala. The four-gate climb takes 90 minutes from the Malavali railway station base. The 'Vinchu Kata' (scorpion's tail) — a 1.5 km narrow ridge — is the most photographed feature. Lonavla locals run weekend trekking tours.
Wax Museum Lonavala
India's first wax museum, opened 2010, with 100+ life-size figures of Indian and Hollywood celebrities. Located on the Karla Road. Open 10 AM to 9 PM; about 1 hour to walk through.
