Overview

Palitana is Jainism's most sacred pilgrimage town, home to Shatrunjaya Hill — a mountain summit covered with 863 marble Jain temples built over 900 years, making it the largest temple complex in the world measured by the number of consecrated shrines. The hill is so sacred to Jains that no one is permitted to sleep on it, meaning every pilgrim must ascend and descend the 3,800 steps on the same day. In 2014, Palitana became the world's first city to officially ban animal slaughter, reflecting the Jain principle of non-violence (ahimsa) embraced by its majority Jain population. The drive from Mumbai to Palitana covers 670 km and typically takes around 10-11 hours via NH 48, passing through scenic landscapes. History & Significance

According to Jain tradition, the Tirthankara Rishabhanatha (the first of the 24 Jain prophets) attained liberation at Shatrunjaya Hill, making it a site of the highest spiritual significance. Temple construction began in the 11th century under the Chalukya king Kumarpal and continued through Mughal times; most temples were destroyed by Muslim governors in the 13th-14th centuries and rebuilt by wealthy Jain merchants, with the current complex largely dating from the 16th century onwards.
