Kota was originally part of the Bundi kingdom until 1631 when Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan carved it out as a separate state for Rao Madho Singh, a Hada Chauhan Rajput. The city prospered under the Kota rulers who built the magnificent Garh Palace overlooking the Chambal. In the 18th century, Kota developed its distinctive miniature painting school known for vivid hunting scenes and royal processions. After independence, Kota became Rajasthan's industrial hub, and from the 1980s onward transformed into India's premier coaching city.
