Overview

Mumbai to Jodhpur is around 900 km and about 12 hours, up NH48 through Gujarat and then across into western Rajasthan towards the Thar's edge. People go for Mehrangarh fort, the blue old town and as a launch point towards Jaisalmer. We run this mostly for families and photographers, and it's usually done with a night halt rather than straight through.

History & Significance

Jodhpur was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, who shifted his capital from nearby Mandore to the more defensible rocky outcrop where Mehrangarh now stands. It became the capital of the kingdom of Marwar and a major trading post on the routes crossing the Thar. The blue-painted houses of the old town are traditionally linked to the Brahmin community, though the colour later spread more widely.

Route Highlights

  • The drive splits cleanly: fast Gujarat highway first, then the flatter, drier Rajasthan run after Udaipur side.
  • Jodhpur gets hot and dry. Carry water, the dry desert air sneaks up on you even in winter.
  • Mehrangarh sits on a rock above the city and dominates everything. Half a day at least, and the road up is steep.
  • The blue houses are in the old town below the fort, around Navchokiya. Lanes are narrow, you walk those.
  • Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar) market is the place for spices and bandhej. Park outside, it's congested.
  • If you're continuing to Jaisalmer, that's another 280-odd km of desert highway. Tell us so we plan fuel and timing.

Places to Visit in Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort

One of the most intact forts in India, sitting 120 metres above the city. The museum inside is genuinely good and the ramparts give you the blue-city view. Budget half a day.

Jaswant Thada

A white marble cenotaph just near the fort, much quieter. A short twenty-minute stop, nice for the carved marble and the small pond beside it.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Part palace-hotel, part museum, part royal residence. Only the museum section is open to the public, so set expectations, you don't see the whole thing.

Clock Tower & Sardar Market

The heart of the old town for spices, textiles and the famous makhaniya lassi nearby. Crowded and lively, good for an hour of wandering.

Toorji Ka Jhalra (Stepwell)

A restored 18th-century stepwell in the old city, now ringed by cafes. Worth a quick look, it's photogenic and right in the walkable zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

At 900 km and 12 hours, it's possible but tiring. We'd rather you take a halt near Udaipur on the way and arrive fresh. Doing it in one go means a very early start and a late finish.
Yes. The Gujarat portion is fast highway, and the Rajasthan section into Jodhpur is mostly good open road. It gets dry and dusty towards the end but the surface holds up fine.
One full day covers Mehrangarh and the old town comfortably. Two days if you want a slower pace or plan to use it as a base before heading to Jaisalmer.
It can be. Jodhpur is on the desert's edge, so April to June is severe heat. The comfortable window is roughly October to February for daytime sightseeing.
Yes, that's a common add-on. It's around 280 km more of desert highway, mostly straight and fast. Just let us know when booking so we plan the fuel stops and timing.
