Overview

Gwalior is dominated by one of India's most formidable hill forts — a sandstone citadel rising 100 metres sheer from the plains that Babur called 'the pearl among the fortresses of India.' The city produced two of India's greatest classical musicians — Tansen, the legendary court musician of Akbar, and Baiju Bawra — and the Gwalior gharana is considered the oldest surviving school of Hindustani classical music. The Jai Vilas Palace, home to the Scindia royal family, houses one of India's most opulent private museums including the world's largest table chandelier. Situated 1200 km from Mumbai, the journey to Gwalior via NH 48 takes roughly 19-20 hours and is one of the most popular outstation routes from the city. History & Significance

Gwalior Fort has changed hands between Gurjara-Pratiharas, Tomars, Mughals, Marathas, and finally the British. Man Singh Tomar (1486–1516), the Tomar Rajput king, built the magnificent Man Mandir Palace within the fort and brought Tansen to Gwalior — establishing its lasting musical legacy. The city later became the seat of the Scindia Maratha dynasty after 1763.
