Overview

Satara is a historic city 260 km south of Mumbai, the original Maratha capital after Chhatrapati Shahuji (Shivaji's grandson) shifted his court here from Raigad in 1707. Drive time from Mumbai is 5-5.5 hours via Mumbai-Pune Expressway then NH 48 south, passing Wai, Mahabaleshwar turn-off and the Satara exit. The city sits at 700 m on the Sahyadri foothills, overlooked by the Ajinkyatara Fort (a 4th-century rock-cut fortress that gave the city its name — 'sat-tara' / 'seven peaks' refers to the seven fort peaks visible from the city). Satara is the gateway to three Sahyadri hill stations within 50 km: Mahabaleshwar (50 km west), Panchgani (40 km west), and Koyna Dam (60 km southwest at Helwak — Asia's 5th largest dam). The Kaas Plateau (UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2012 — a high-altitude basalt plateau famous for the September-October mass-flowering 'flower carpet' of 850+ wildflower species) is 25 km west of Satara city. Other attractions: the New Palace (1908 residence of the Bhonsle Chhatrapati family), Sajjangad (the 17th-century citadel of saint Samarth Ramdas, Shivaji's spiritual guru), Thoseghar Falls (a 200 m monsoon cascade, 18 km from city), and Sangam Mahuli (the confluence of Krishna and Venna rivers, with the 1745 Vishweshwar Mandir). Best season: September-October for Kaas Plateau wildflowers (1-month window only); October-February for clear weather; July-September for the waterfalls.

History & Significance

Satara was the post-Aurangzeb Maratha imperial capital from 1708 and remained the symbolic seat of the Chhatrapati (Maratha emperor) until 1848, when the British annexed it after a failed succession, making it the first Maratha state absorbed under the Doctrine of Lapse. The Maratha kings are entombed at Satara's royal cenotaphs, and the Ajinkyatara fort above the city was the seat of Maratha power for over 150 years.

Places to Visit in Satara

Ajinkyatara Fort

A 4th-century rock-cut hill fortress at 1,000 m, overlooking Satara city. Among the oldest forts in Maharashtra; the name 'Satara' comes from the seven peaks (sat-tara) visible from the fort. 1.5 km motor road climbs to within 200 m of the summit; final 200 m is steps.

Kaas Plateau

A UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site (listed 2012) at 1,200 m, 25 km west of Satara. A 10 km² high-altitude basalt plateau that mass-flowers in September-October — 850+ wildflower species turn the plateau into a colour-changing carpet. Entry requires online permit booking at kas.ind.in.

Sajjangad

The 17th-century citadel of Samarth Ramdas Swami, Shivaji's spiritual guru. 18 km west of Satara at 1,000 m. The Ramdas Swami samadhi shrine, Datta Mandir and the 30-foot Hanuman statue are inside the fort. Daily aarti at 6 AM and 7 PM.

Thoseghar Falls

A 200 m monsoon waterfall on the Sahyadri scarp, 18 km from Satara city. Active July-October. The viewing platform is 200 m walk from the parking lot. Eight smaller cascades on the surrounding hillside in heavy monsoon.

New Palace, Satara

A 1908 Indo-Saracenic residence of the Bhonsle Chhatrapati family — descendants of Shivaji. Royal-style apartments, durbar hall, vintage car collection. The family still lives in part of the palace; the rest is open for paid heritage tours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mid-September to mid-October — the 4-5 week window when the plateau mass-flowers. Peak weeks vary year by year based on monsoon-end timing. Maharashtra Forest Department issues 3,000 daily permits at kas.ind.in — book 2-3 weeks ahead, especially weekends.
Excellent base if you have a 3-4 day trip — Satara is 50 km below Mahabaleshwar at the road junction. Day 1: Satara city + Kaas. Day 2: Mahabaleshwar + Panchgani. Day 3: Wai + Sajjangad + return Mumbai. Total 600 km over 4 days.
Yes — paved motor road climbs to within 200 metres of the summit. Final 200 m is steps. Most cab passengers drive up. The summit has a 360-degree view of Satara city and the Sahyadri ranges.
Only in monsoon and immediate post-monsoon (July to November). Reduced flow December-February; dry March-June. The viewpoint is open year-round but the waterfall itself is the seasonal attraction.
Kandi Pedha (saffron-cardamom milk fudge, similar to Wai variety), Kolhapuri tambda-pandhara rassa (the spicy red-and-white meat curry), and Bhakri-Pithla. Bhilar village (en route to Mahabaleshwar) is also famous for the 'Strawberry Festival' in February.
