Overview
Anand is the birthplace of India's White Revolution — the town is home to the Amul dairy cooperative, the world's largest farmer-owned dairy organisation that transformed India from a milk-deficient country into the world's largest milk producer. Amul was founded in Anand in 1946 by Tribhuvandas Patel and later led by Dr. Verghese Kurien, whose cooperative model became a global template for rural development. Visitors can tour the Amul Dairy plant and see the processing of 7 million litres of milk per day. Situated 490 km from Mumbai, the journey to Anand via NH 48 takes roughly 8-9 hours and is one of the most popular outstation routes from the city. NH 48 / National Highway GujaratHistory & Significance
The cooperative was born from a 1946 farmers' strike against exploitative private dairy contractors; Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel advised the farmers to form their own cooperative. Verghese Kurien, who took over management in the 1950s, built it into the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation — the organisation behind the 'Amul Girl' advertising campaign running continuously since 1966, making it India's longest-running ad campaign.
