Overview

Ahmedabad is Gujarat's largest city, 525 km north of Mumbai, reached in 8-9 hours on the new Mumbai-Vadodara six-lane expressway (NE-3 / Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Vadodara-Ahmedabad segment opened 2023). The route is Mumbai → Surat → Bharuch → Vadodara → Ahmedabad on the Vadodara-Mumbai segment of NE-3 (toll roughly 1,400 rupees one-way for a passenger car), with the older NH 48 / Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway as alternate. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its 'Walled City' (granted 2017 — the first Indian city to receive this status), a 5.43 km² historic core containing 600+ pol mohalla courtyards, the Jama Masjid (1424), Sidi Saiyyed Mosque (1573) with its famous filigreed Tree of Life jali screen, and the Bhadra Fort. Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram on the riverbank is the start of the 1930 Dandi salt march memorial trail. Sarkhej Roza (the spiritual centre of Gujarat Sultanate) and Adalaj Stepwell (a 1499 five-storey octagonal Hindu stepwell) are unmissable architectural sites. Modern Ahmedabad is India's textile-and-pharma hub, with the Sabarmati Riverfront promenade, Kankaria Lake, the Calico Museum, and the under-construction GIFT City finance district 12 km out at Gandhinagar. Best season is October to February; March-May is dry-hot 40-44°C; July-September is monsoon with sporadic urban flooding. Allow a minimum 2 days to cover the Walled City + Sabarmati + Adalaj.

History & Significance

Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah, Ahmedabad grew into a prosperous textile center nicknamed 'Manchester of the East.' Mahatma Gandhi established the Sabarmati Ashram here in 1917, and the city played a central role in India's independence movement. The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent. Over the years, various dynasties and rulers have left their mark on Ahmedabad, contributing to its rich architectural and cultural heritage that visitors can still appreciate today.

Places to Visit in Ahmedabad

Sabarmati Ashram

Mahatma Gandhi's home and ashram 1917-1930, the launching point of the 1930 Dandi salt march. The Hridaya Kunj cottage where he lived, the Magan Niwas, and the Mira Kuti are kept as-is. Free entry, open 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. Museum has Gandhi's spinning wheel, letters and photos.

Adalaj Stepwell

A 1499 octagonal five-storey stepwell built by Queen Rudabai of the Vaghela dynasty, 18 km north of city. Combines Hindu, Jain and Islamic motifs (a unique 'syncretic' style of the Gujarat Sultanate era). The 30-metre descent has cool air even at 45°C surface temperature.

Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

A 1573 Gujarat Sultanate mosque famous for its ten semicircular windows with intricate Tree-of-Life and palm-tree jali (perforated stone) screens. The jali is the unofficial logo of IIM-Ahmedabad. The mosque is in the city centre next to the Lal Darwaja market.

Akshardham Temple, Gandhinagar

A 1992 BAPS Swaminarayan complex in Gandhinagar, 25 km north. The 7-acre site has a 7-storey rosey-pink-sandstone main shrine, a Sahaj Anand water show (evening) and detailed BAPS Akshar-Purushottam exhibits. Security like an airport — phones not allowed inside.

Walled City and Pol Heritage Walk

The 5.43 km² UNESCO-listed historic core with 600+ pol mohalla courtyards, the Manek Chowk vegetable-by-day food-by-night market, the Jama Masjid (1424), and the Bhadra Fort. Guided morning walks run 7 AM-10 AM through Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
