Overview

Matheran is Asia's smallest hill station and India's only vehicle-free hill station — no cars, scooters, or motorcycles are allowed past the Dasturi check-post. It sits 90 km southeast of Mumbai at 803 metres on a flat plateau in the Western Ghats, with red-laterite walking paths and 38 named viewpoints around the table-top. The drive from Mumbai to Dasturi takes about 2-2.5 hours via Mumbai-Pune Expressway up to Bhoaur and then the 8 km uphill from Neral via NH 79. From Dasturi, the final 3 km into Matheran town must be covered by foot, horse, or hand-pulled rickshaw — most visitors choose the easy 45-minute walk on the red mud road. The 1907 narrow-gauge toy train from Neral (a 2-foot-gauge railway hauling tourists up the 21 km climb in 2 hours) is still operating, but is heavily booked and runs only between October and May (no monsoon service due to landslide risk). Matheran was 'discovered' as a hill retreat in 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the District Collector of Thane, and the original British bungalows around the central market still operate as heritage hotels — Lord's Central, Verandah in the Forest, Westend, Adamo. Famous viewpoints include Panorama Point (sunrise — see Mumbai-Pune Expressway 800 m below), Echo Point, Charlotte Lake (the only natural water-body), Louisa Point (sunset), and the chikki and leather-belt market on M.G. Road. Best season October-May; June-September the plateau gets 5,500 mm rain and most hotels close.

History & Significance

Matheran was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the collector of Thane, in 1850. The famous Matheran Hill Railway, a narrow-gauge toy train, was built in 1907 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site. The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent. Over the years, various dynasties and rulers have left their mark on Matheran, contributing to its rich architectural and cultural heritage that visitors can still appreciate today.

Places to Visit in Matheran

Panorama Point

The sunrise viewpoint on the northern edge of the Matheran plateau, with an unobstructed view of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway 800 m below. The first golden light hits the cliff at 6:15 AM (winter) to 5:45 AM (summer). 45-minute walk from the central market.

Charlotte Lake

A small artificial lake 1.6 km from the market, built 1857 as Matheran's water reservoir. The earthen dam wall has Pisarnath Mahadev shrine. Boating is banned to preserve drinking water; walking trails and Echo Point overlook surround the lake.

Louisa Point

The most popular sunset viewpoint, named after the wife of an early British resident. View covers Prabal and Vikatgad forts. The narrow rock platform extends 3 m beyond the cliff edge — popular for photos but no protective railing.

Matheran Toy Train Station

The terminus of the 1907 narrow-gauge railway from Neral. The 21 km route climbs 1 in 33 gradient — one of the steepest passenger railways in Asia. Train service operates October to May only (monsoon closure due to landslide risk). 4-coach trains, 2-hour journey.

M.G. Road Chikki and Leather Market

The 600-metre car-free main bazaar lined with chikki shops (peanut-jaggery brittle), traditional leather belts and chappals, and Indian-Persian carpets. Many shops have operated since the 1920s. Cash and UPI both accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

3 km of mud road. Three options: walk (45 minutes downhill, 60 minutes uphill), horse (300 rupees one-way), or hand-pulled rickshaw (400 rupees). Most visitors walk down; horse or rickshaw on the way back if tired.
No — service runs only October to May. The 1907 narrow-gauge line closes June-September due to landslide and erosion risk on the steep climb from Neral. When running, it is 4 trains daily each direction; book online at irctc.co.in 30 days in advance (heavily booked weekends).
No — Matheran has been vehicle-free since 1900 and is the only such hill station in India. All vehicles stop at Dasturi check-post. Even residents use bicycles only; emergency ambulances and one fire-engine are the sole motorised vehicles allowed inside town.
Heritage British-era bungalows are the iconic option: Lord's Central (since 1875), Verandah in the Forest (a restored 1869 Capt. Barr's bungalow), Westend (1880s) and Adamo the Resort. Mid-range options: Horseland, Lake View. All within 1-2 km of the market on car-free paths.
One full day is the minimum (covers 6-8 viewpoints + market); two days is comfortable for the full 38 viewpoints + Charlotte Lake + Pisarnath shrine. Many Mumbai cabs do an early-morning day-trip (5 AM Mumbai → 7:30 AM Dasturi → 6 PM return to Dasturi → 9 PM Mumbai).
