Overview
Panchgani (Panch-gani — 'five hills') is 245 km south of Mumbai in Satara district, sitting at 1,334 metres on a five-hill plateau adjoining the larger Mahabaleshwar plateau just 18 km west. The drive takes 5 to 5.5 hours by AC Sedan via Mumbai-Pune Expressway up to Khed-Shivapur, then NH 48 south to Wai, and the final 18 km ghat climb. Panchgani Table Land — at 4,500 ft (1,372 m) — is the second-highest mountain plateau in Asia after the Tibetan steppe, a flat 95-acre volcanic-rock table-top that has been used as a horse-racing, paragliding and Bollywood filming venue for decades. The town was established as a British 'hot-weather sanitarium' in 1860 by John Chesson, the Superintendent of the Satara Agency, and the Mary's Charity School (1882), New Era High School (1922) and the iconic Sherwood Hotel still operate. Sydney Point, Parsi Point, Devil's Kitchen (Pandava-era caves), and the Mapro Garden (8 km on the road to Mahabaleshwar) are the standard sightseeing circuit. The town is also home to the SDLT (Sydney Doll Museum), the Rajpuri Caves (where the Pandavas are believed to have stayed), and the Krishna Valley viewpoint over the river that splits Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar plateaus. Strawberry farms surround the town — Mapro's flagship farm at Bhilar is the largest. Pair Panchgani with Mahabaleshwar (18 km, 30 min), Wai (45 km), or Pratapgad Fort. Best season October-February for clear views and strawberries.
