Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, which rose in the 14th century and grew into one of the largest and richest cities of its time, controlling much of southern India. At its height it was a major centre of trade and temple-building under rulers like Krishnadevaraya. The city was sacked in 1565 after the empire's defeat at the battle of Talikota, and the ruins that survive across that boulder landscape are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Places to Visit in Hampi
Virupaksha Temple
The main working temple, still active, with the big gopuram you see in most photos. It anchors the old Hampi bazaar and is the usual starting point for a walk through the ruins.
Vijaya Vittala Temple
The famous one with the stone chariot and the musical pillars. It's a bit of a walk or a battery-buggy ride from the entrance, and it's the single most worth-it site here.
Hemakuta Hill
A cluster of smaller temples on a low hill near Virupaksha, easy to climb and the best spot for sunset over the boulders. Good for a slower hour towards evening.
Lotus Mahal & Elephant Stables
In the royal enclosure, an Indo-Islamic style pavilion and the long-domed stables that once held the royal elephants. Cleaner, more open ground, easier walking than the temple zone.
Matanga Hill
A steeper climb for the panoramic view across the whole ruin field. Best at sunrise, but it's a real hike up rock-cut steps, so only if you're up for it.
