Large stretches of NH66 are now four-lane, though sections through the Konkan still narrow into ghat curves and small-town bottlenecks, so a realistic one-way running time is about 10 to 12 hours including short breaks. Most travellers leave Mumbai in the pre-dawn hours, around 4 to 5 AM, to clear the city and Panvel traffic before it builds and to reach the coast in daylight. Because of the distance, Murudeshwar suits a round-trip cab booking with an overnight halt rather than a same-day return; many people pair it with Gokarna or Goa on the way. Good halt points for tea, food or fuel include Chiplun, the Ratnagiri bypass and Karwar. The Konkan monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain and slippery ghat sections, so the road is most comfortable between October and March. A well-maintained sedan or SUV is advisable given the long coastal haul and occasional rough patches near the state border.

The Murudeshwar Temple has ancient origins linked to the legend of Ravana and the Atma Linga. According to mythology, the linga was installed here after Ravana failed to carry it to Lanka. The modern temple complex with its towering gopura was renovated and expanded by industrialist R.N. Shetty in the early 2000s. The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent.
