The road runs Mumbai to Thane, up through Nashik, on to Dhule, then across the Madhya Pradesh border toward Indore, with the final short 55 km leg from Indore into Ujjain. Expect a realistic 12 to 14 hours of driving including meal and fuel halts; the climb out of the Kasara ghat toward Nashik and city traffic at both ends are the main slow stretches. Because of the distance, most travellers prefer an early pre-dawn departure from Mumbai to reach Ujjain by evening, or break the journey with an overnight stop near Nashik or Indore. The corridor is largely four-lane and well maintained, with numerous food stops and clean dhabas around Nashik and Dhule. A round-trip cab suits pilgrims who want to combine Ujjain with Omkareshwar or Indore, while a one-way drop works for those continuing onward or returning by train.
