Overview

Saputara is Gujarat's only real hill station, about 250 km from Mumbai up in the Dang district. You head out on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and then climb the ghats past Nashik side and Waghai. It's an easy weekend hill escape, cooler than the plains, and families with kids love the lake, the ropeway and the cool evenings.

History & Significance

Saputara, whose name means abode of serpents in the local tongue, developed as a planned hill station after Gujarat's formation in 1960, when the state wanted a cool-weather retreat of its own. It sits in the Dang district, home to several Adivasi communities whose art and Holi celebrations remain a part of the area's character. Its altitude of around 1,000 metres keeps it noticeably cooler than the Gujarat plains below.

Route Highlights

  • The drive is 5 to 6 hours, smooth highway most of the way until the final ghat climb up to the plateau.
  • The last 50-odd km from Waghai up to Saputara is a winding ghat, lovely views but take it slow if anyone gets carsick.
  • Saputara Lake is the centre of everything, boating, the garden, and the evening crowd all gather here.
  • Monsoon turns the whole Dang region green with waterfalls along the road, but the ghat gets slippery, so July-September needs a careful driver.
  • It's compact, you can cover the main spots in a day and a half without rushing.
  • Carry a light jacket, evenings on the plateau get genuinely cool even in summer.

Places to Visit in Saputara

Saputara Lake

The heart of the hill station with pedal and row boats. The promenade around it fills up in the evening with stalls and families. Easygoing and central.

Ropeway to Sunset Point

A short cable car ride up to the Governor's Hill area for views over the valley. Goes up to a viewpoint that's good around sundown, hence the name.

Gira Waterfall

About 50 km away near Waghai, fullest during and just after the monsoon. Off-season it can be a trickle, so worth checking before making the drive out.

Artist Village (Hatgadh / Ropeway Garden)

A spot showcasing local Dang tribal art and bamboo crafts. Decent for a short browse and to pick up something handmade.

Step Garden and Lake Garden

Landscaped gardens along the lakeside, easy walks with viewpoints. Good for a relaxed morning if you're travelling with elders or small kids.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's one of the better short hill options. Five to six hours up, and the place is small enough to enjoy in two days. Leave Friday evening or Saturday morning and you're set.
Monsoon and just after, roughly July to October, when the Dang hills are green and the waterfalls are running. Summer is still pleasant up top, but the falls dry up.
The final climb is a proper hill road with hairpins. It's well-surfaced but needs a steady hand, especially in the rains. Our drivers know this stretch, so it's not a worry.
Plenty, boating on the lake, the ropeway, gardens and a small lake-side amusement area. It's a family-friendly place rather than an adventure one.
No special permit for a private cab. It's a normal interstate trip, just the usual highway tolls and the Maharashtra-Gujarat border crossing, which we handle.
