Overview

Surat is the diamond-and-textile capital of Gujarat, 285 km north of Mumbai on the new NE-3 / Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (Mumbai-Vadodara segment, opened progressively 2022-2023). Drive time is 4.5 to 5.5 hours by AC Sedan, with a single toll figure of around 700 rupees one-way and the inter-state permit fee (about 800 rupees) at the Bhilad check-post on the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. The city sits on the Tapi river, 14 km inland from the Arabian Sea, and is among India's fastest-growing urban areas — its global share of polished-diamond manufacturing is around 90%, employing 600,000+ artisans in the Varachha and Mahidharpura cutting clusters. The Old City Wall, the Dutch and Armenian cemeteries (legacy of the 16th-17th century European trading posts), and the 1546 Surat Castle on the Tapi confluence are the major heritage sites. The Surat Diamond Bourse, opened 2023 in Khajod on the city outskirts, is the world's largest office building (more floor area than the Pentagon) and is the new wholesale trading hub replacing Opera House in Mumbai. Modern Surat is also known for Suryaputra Tapi riverfront, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue and the Dumas Beach (16 km south on the Arabian Sea). Food: locho, undhiyu, surti khaman, ghari, jalebi-fafda — the Lal Darwaja Saturday morning market is a textile bargain hunt. Best season October-February.

History & Significance

Surat was one of India's most important trading ports under the Mughals, and the East India Company established its first factory here in 1613. The city rebuilt itself after devastating floods and plague in the 1990s to become one of India's cleanest cities. The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent. Over the years, various dynasties and rulers have left their mark on Surat, contributing to its rich architectural and cultural heritage that visitors can still appreciate today.

Places to Visit in Surat

Surat Castle

A 1546 fortress on the Tapi river built by Khudawand Khan, governor under Sultan Mahmud III. Survived Maratha and Portuguese sieges and was repurposed as a British East India Company office. Currently being restored as a heritage museum — entry on weekends only.

Dutch and Armenian Cemeteries

Adjacent 17th-century European graveyards on Katargam Road, legacy of Surat's role as Mughal India's main port to Europe (the first English East India Company factory opened here in 1612). The Dutch tombs are taller and more ornate; the Armenian section is smaller but better-preserved.

Sardar Patel Statue and Tapi Riverfront

A 25-metre bronze of Sardar Patel on the Tapi riverfront promenade, opened 2018. The 2 km riverfront has musical fountains, food courts, and a fitness path. Sunset is the popular visit time.

Dumas Beach

A black-sand Arabian Sea beach 16 km south of Surat at the Tapi-Arabian Sea estuary, famous for its undhiyu-and-pao street food stalls and the controversial 'haunted beach' folklore. Daytime visit recommended — strong currents at sea, swimming not allowed.

Diamond Bourse, Khajod

World's largest single office building by floor area (660,000 m², larger than the Pentagon). Opened December 2023 as the new global diamond-trading hub. Public access limited to the visitor centre on weekdays — diamond market floors are member-only.
