Overview

Mumbai to Mysore is a long southern haul, around 770 km but closer to 13 hours because of the terrain and town stretches as you head down through Karnataka. People go for the Palace, the Dasara season and as a gateway to Coorg and Ooty. We run this for families and South India circuit travellers, usually with a halt rather than straight through.

History & Significance

Mysore was the seat of the Wodeyar dynasty, who ruled the kingdom of Mysore from the late 14th century, with an interruption in the 18th century under Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. The present palace was rebuilt in the early 1900s after the older wooden one burned down, designed by the British architect Henry Irwin in the Indo-Saracenic style. The Wodeyars also formalised the grand Dasara celebrations, which remain the city's signature event.

Route Highlights

  • Despite being 770 km, the drive eats time because the lower Karnataka section isn't all expressway. Plan 13 hours realistically.
  • Many passengers break the trip near Hubballi or Davangere for the night and finish fresh the next morning.
  • Mysore Palace lights up in the evening on certain days, that's a sight worth timing your day around.
  • The city is fairly easy to drive in compared to the bigger metros, and parking near the main sights is manageable.
  • If you visit during Dasara (around October), the whole city is decked out and busy. Book hotels well ahead.
  • Mysore works well as a base, Coorg and Ooty are both within onward reach. Mention it if you want a circuit.

Places to Visit in Mysore (Mysuru)

Mysore Palace

The Wodeyar royal palace, and the main reason most people come. The interiors are ornate and on Sundays and holidays the whole exterior is lit up with thousands of bulbs in the evening.

Chamundi Hill

The temple-topped hill overlooking the city, about 13 km up a drivable road. The Chamundeshwari temple and the big Nandi statue partway up are the stops. View of the city is good on a clear day.

St. Philomena's Church

A large neo-Gothic church, one of the tallest in the country. A quick stop, mainly for the architecture which feels unexpected in this setting.

Brindavan Gardens

The terraced gardens below the KRS dam, about 20 km out, known for the evening musical fountain show. It gets crowded and the timing of the fountain matters, so check before going.

Mysore Zoo

One of India's older and better-kept zoos, good for families with kids. Allow a couple of hours, there's a fair bit of walking involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

The lower Karnataka portion has slower, non-expressway stretches and a few town crossings that drag the average speed down. It's not a straight fast highway the whole way like the Gujarat routes are.
We recommend it. A night halt around Hubballi or Davangere splits the drive sensibly and you reach Mysore without being exhausted. Doing 13 hours in one go is a lot.
Generally yes. There are good highway sections and some slower mixed-traffic stretches, but no badly broken roads to worry about. The drive is just long rather than rough.
Pleasant for most of the year given the climate. The standout time is Dasara, usually in October, when the city and palace are decorated and there are processions, but it's also the most crowded.
Yes, both are common onward legs and Mysore sits nicely between them. Coorg is around 120 km and Ooty around 125 km from here. Tell us in advance so we plan the full circuit.
