Overview
Sasan Gir is the world's only habitat of the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) outside Africa, making it the single most important wildlife destination in India for lion sightings — an animal completely extinct in the wild everywhere else. The Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary covers 1,412 sq km of dry deciduous forest in the Saurashtra peninsula, and the lion population has grown from a critically endangered 180 individuals in 1968 to over 600 today — one of conservation's greatest success stories. The sanctuary also harbours leopards, sloth bears, hyenas, and over 300 bird species. The road from Mumbai to Sasan Gir stretches 855 km via NH 48, a comfortable 13-14-hour drive that many travellers find enjoyable. Whether visiting for the first time or returning, a Mumbai to Sasan Gir taxi with Miles Tours ensures a safe, comfortable, and affordable road trip.
NH 48 / National Highway GujaratHistory & Significance
By the early 20th century, Asiatic lions had been hunted to near-extinction across South Asia and the Middle East; in 1900 only about 20 survived, protected in the private hunting grounds of the Nawab of Junagadh. The Indian government established the Gir Sanctuary in 1965 and banned lion hunting, and the population's subsequent recovery led to Gir being designated a national park in 1975.
