Kolaba Fort in Alibaug, Maharashtra Alibaug — popular tourist destination in Maharashtra Kashid Beach in Alibaug Scenic view of Alibaug, Maharashtra Mandwa Beach and Jetty — Mumbai to Alibaug trip

Overview

Alibaug is 95 km south of Mumbai by road (or 35 km by sea), the headquarter town of Raigad district and the most accessible weekend beach destination from the city. The fastest route is the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Sea Link (Atal Setu, opened January 2024) → NH 348 → Alibaug, cutting drive time to 90-100 minutes by AC Sedan (compared to 2.5-3 hours via the older Panvel-Pen route). Many passengers prefer the RoRo (Roll-On-Roll-Off) ferry from Mumbai Bhau-cha-Dhakka to Mandwa jetty (35 minutes by ferry; another 10 km of road to Alibaug town) — the ferry takes cars and Miles Tours occasionally operates the Mumbai-Mandwa-Alibaug-Mandwa-Mumbai loop including the ferry. Alibaug itself has 14 named beaches on a 25 km coastline — Alibaug, Akshi, Nagaon, Kihim, Mandwa, Kashid, Murud — each with its own character. Kihim is the cleanest, Nagaon has the most resorts and watersport, Akshi is quietest, and Mandwa is the upscale-villa belt where Mumbai's celebrity weekend homes (Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar) cluster. The 1660 Kolaba Fort, accessible by foot at low tide and by boat at high tide, is the iconic Maratha sea-fort built by Shivaji. Other sights include the 1881 Magnetic Observatory (one of only two on the Indian coast), the Kanakeshwar Mandir (a 1764 hilltop Shiva temple, 4 km of steps), Kashid Beach (30 km south, generally considered the prettiest Konkan beach), and the Korlai Lighthouse and Portuguese fort at the southern tip. Best season October-March.

History & Significance

Alibaug was established as the headquarters of the Maratha navy under Kanhoji Angre in the early 18th century. The iconic Kolaba Fort, standing in the sea just off Alibaug beach, was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1680. The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent. Over the years, various dynasties and rulers have left their mark on Alibaug, contributing to its rich architectural and cultural heritage that visitors can still appreciate today.

Places to Visit in Alibaug

Kolaba Fort

A 1660 sea-fort built by Shivaji on a tidal island 100 m off Alibaug beach. Accessible on foot at low tide; boat ride 150 rupees at high tide. The Hanuman temple, Mahishasur Mardini shrine, and freshwater wells inside the fort still function. 30-minute walk-through.

Kashid Beach

A 3 km white-sand beach 30 km south of Alibaug, edged by casuarina groves. Generally considered the prettiest Konkan beach near Mumbai. Watersport stalls offer banana-boat, jet-ski, parasailing. Several resorts on the beach road; less crowded than Alibaug-Nagaon weekends.

Mandwa Beach and Jetty

The arrival point of the Mumbai-Mandwa ferry, also a beach village 10 km north of Alibaug town. The upscale-villa belt extends from Mandwa to Saral — Bollywood and corporate Mumbai weekend homes. The Salaaya Lighthouse and Marina Bay restaurants are popular evening venues.

Kanakeshwar Mandir

A 1764 hilltop Shiva temple 12 km from Alibaug, reached by a 750-step climb (45-60 minutes ascent). The shikhara has rare stone carving of Naga-yakshi figures; views from the summit cover the Alibaug coast. Visit early morning to avoid the midday sun.

Korlai Lighthouse and Portuguese Fort

A 1521 Portuguese fort at the southern tip of the Alibaug-Murud coast, with a 1955 lighthouse on top. The Old Korlai village below preserves the Indo-Portuguese 'Kristang' creole language — one of only three surviving in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

For one passenger, the Mandwa ferry is faster and more pleasant — 35 minutes by sea vs 90 minutes by car. For 4+ passengers with luggage or for staying in Kashid / Murud, drive via Atal Setu is more practical. Many Miles Tours customers go by ferry one-way and return by car (lower total fare than two cab legs).
The Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link toll is 250 rupees one-way for a car (as of 2026). Total toll for Mumbai-Alibaug round trip including the older NH 348 plaza is around 500-550 rupees.
Only at low tide. Tide times are posted on the Alibaug beach board and on the Indian Coast Guard website. Most days have two low-tide windows of 2-3 hours each. At high tide, fort access is by boat only (150 rupees) from the beach.
Yes — the standard 'Konkan beach loop'. Day 1: Mumbai → Alibaug (Kolaba Fort, lunch, Nagaon beach). Day 2: Kashid Beach (full day) → Murud Janjira sea-fort (evening boat). Day 3: Korlai Lighthouse → Mumbai. 350 km total over 3 days.
Mandwa-Saral villas are the most expensive — 25,000 to 80,000 rupees per night for a 4-bedroom property. Nagaon and Akshi resorts are mid-range — 5,000 to 15,000 rupees. Backpacker hostels and home-stays exist at Alibaug town itself for 1,500-2,500 rupees.
