Overview

Mandu, also called Mandav, is an enchanting hilltop fortress city perched at 600 meters in the Vindhya Range of Madhya Pradesh. Famous for the romantic legend of Sultan Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati, Mandu's Afghan architecture — including the ship-shaped Jahaz Mahal floating between two reservoirs, the hilltop Roopmati Pavilion with sweeping Narmada valley views, and the elegant marble tomb of Hoshang Shah considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal — stands amidst lush ravines and ancient baobab trees found nowhere else in India. During the monsoon, the entire plateau transforms into a green paradise with waterfalls cascading over the fort walls. A taxi from Mumbai to Mandav via Miles Tours & Travels lets you explore one of India's most atmospheric and least crowded heritage destinations in comfort.

History & Significance

Mandu served as a fortified hill retreat from the 6th century under the Paramara Rajputs. In 1305, the Delhi Sultanate captured it, and in 1401, Dilawar Khan declared it the capital of the independent Malwa Sultanate. His son Hoshang Shah built the iconic marble tomb considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal. The city later flourished under Sultan Baz Bahadur before the Mughals annexed it in 1561. Its 45-km perimeter wall, twelve gateways, and palatial ruins remain remarkably intact.
