Overview

The Valley of Flowers National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas, a 87 sq km high-altitude valley at 3,352 to 3,658 metres carpeted with over 600 species of flowering plants during the brief summer bloom from July to September. The valley was unknown to the outside world until British mountaineer Frank Smythe stumbled upon it in 1931 during his return from a Kamet expedition and wrote a book about its extraordinary floral diversity. The valley shelters rare Himalayan species including the blue poppy, Brahma Kamal, and cobra lily. From Mumbai, Valley of Flowers is approximately 1680 kilometres away — a 30-32-hour drive on NH 48 to Delhi → NH 334 to Dehradun → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath → Govindghat → 17 km trek that offers pleasant highway views. History & Significance

Frank Smythe's 1931 discovery and his subsequent book 'The Valley of Flowers' brought international attention to this hidden Himalayan valley. Joan Margaret Legge, a botanist who spent years studying the valley's flora, died in a fall here in 1939 and is buried within the valley. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 2005 alongside Nanda Devi National Park, recognising the region's outstanding natural beauty and ecological significance.
