Mumbai to Goa Road Trip by Cab — Your Complete 2025 Guide

Back to Blog

There are road trips, and then there is the Mumbai to Goa road trip. Winding past mangroves, crossing emerald rivers, stopping at ancient sea forts and sleepy coastal villages before the Goan sun pulls you in — it is one of the great drives of India. This guide covers everything: the best route, top stops, what to pack, best time to travel and cab fares for 2025.

Overview: Mumbai to Goa Distance & Time

The distance from Mumbai to Goa by road is approximately 590 km depending on the exact route and stops. By cab, expect a driving time of 10–11 hours non-stop via the NH66 coastal highway. Most travellers break the journey overnight at a midway stop and complete it over two days — which we strongly recommend so you can actually enjoy the scenery.

Quick Facts: Mumbai to Goa — 590 km  |  ~10–11 hours (non-stop)  |  Best time: October–February  |  Route: NH66 Coastal Highway

Starting early — ideally by 5 AM from Mumbai — means you beat city traffic and reach Goa well before nightfall even with a few stops.

Best Route: Mumbai to Goa via NH66

The NH66 coastal route (formerly NH17) is the recommended road for the Mumbai–Goa journey. It runs along the Konkan coast, passing through Pune Road, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts before entering Goa.

The route takes you through dense Western Ghats foothills on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other. The road quality is largely excellent — four-lane in most stretches — with the occasional ghat section requiring careful driving. Our Miles Tours drivers are experienced on this route year-round.

An alternate route goes via Pune and then NH48, but this misses all the coastal beauty and adds unnecessary distance. NH66 is the clear winner for a road trip.

Top Stops Between Mumbai and Goa

One of the great pleasures of this drive is the stops. Here are the best ones to plan around:

Alibaug (60 km from Mumbai)

Just an hour from the city, Alibaug offers beautiful beaches and the historic Kolaba Fort — a sea fort accessible by foot at low tide. Perfect for a breakfast/morning stop before the long drive south.

Murud-Janjira (130 km)

The Murud-Janjira sea fort is one of the most impressive coastal fortifications in India — built on an island in the sea and never captured by European powers. Take a short boat ride to explore it. The nearby Murud beach is wide and largely uncrowded.

Ganpatipule (370 km)

A major pilgrimage and beach town on the Ratnagiri coast. The Ganpatipule temple (swayambhu Ganesh shrine) faces the sea, making it uniquely scenic. The beach here is clean with warm water — great for a swim and lunch break.

Vengurla (500 km)

Just 90 km before the Goa border, Vengurla is one of Konkan's best-kept secrets. Its beaches — especially Sagareshwar and Mochemad — are pristine, calm and far less crowded than anything in Goa proper. A perfect final stop before crossing into Goa.

Best Time to Visit Goa from Mumbai

October to February is the best season for the Mumbai–Goa road trip. The weather is cool and clear, beaches are at their best, and the drive through the Konkan is glorious. December and January are peak season — book accommodation well in advance.

March to May is hot but manageable if you are a beach person. The sea is still good and tourist crowds thin slightly after mid-March.

June to September (Monsoon): While Goa and the Konkan are stunningly green in the rains, we do not recommend driving NH66 during peak monsoon (July–August). Heavy rain, landslides and flooded roads make the journey risky and stressful. If you must travel in this period, check road conditions with us before departure.

What to Pack for the Mumbai–Goa Road Trip

  • Comfortable clothes and footwear — you will be in the car for many hours, dress easy
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses — the Konkan sun is fierce, especially at beach stops
  • Snacks and water — our drivers know great roadside dhabas, but always carry water
  • Valid ID — required at some bridges and entry checkposts near Goa border
  • Cash (₹500–1,000) — some coastal stops have no card/UPI acceptance
  • Camera or phone with good storage — every stretch of NH66 is Instagrammable
