Overview
Nainital is Uttarakhand's most famous hill station, built around the emerald Naini Lake at an altitude of 1,938 metres in the Kumaon Hills. The pear-shaped lake, surrounded by seven hills, gives the town its name and its character — a long promenade called the Mall Road runs along one shore while dense oak and pine forests cover the slopes above. The town was founded as a British hill station in 1841 and retains its colonial-era charm with churches, boarding schools, and the Governor's House (Raj Bhavan) set amid 220 acres of gardens. Situated 1310 km from Mumbai, the journey to Nainital via NH 48 to Delhi → NH 9 to Moradabad → Rampur → Haldwani → Nainital takes roughly 21-22 hours and is one of the most popular outstation routes from the city.
