Overview

Kovalam is Kerala's most famous beach resort town, located 16 km from Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram), featuring three crescent-shaped beaches separated by rocky headlands jutting into the Arabian Sea. Lighthouse Beach, the southernmost of the three, is crowned by a 35-metre Vizhinjam Lighthouse and is the most popular stretch, lined with Ayurvedic massage centres, seafood restaurants, and surf schools. The town pioneered beach tourism in Kerala in the 1930s when the Travancore Maharani introduced it to European visitors, and it remains the state's premier coastal destination. From Mumbai, Kovalam is approximately 1500 kilometres away — a 24-25-hour drive on NH 66 via Goa → Karnataka coast → Kasaragod → Kannur → Kozhikode → Kochi → Trivandrum → Kovalam that offers pleasant highway views. Planning a trip from Mumbai? Our outstation cab service to Kovalam includes professional drivers, AC vehicles, and no hidden charges.

History & Significance

Kovalam was put on the international tourism map in the 1930s when the Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore built the Halcyon Castle overlooking the beach and hosted European dignitaries. In the 1970s, Kovalam became a stop on the hippie trail, attracting Western backpackers who established it as India's answer to Mediterranean beach culture. Today it is a well-developed resort town that balances traditional Kerala fishing village character with international tourism infrastructure.
