Kovalam was put on the international tourism map in the 1930s when the Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore built the Halcyon Castle overlooking the beach and hosted European dignitaries. In the 1970s, Kovalam became a stop on the hippie trail, attracting Western backpackers who established it as India's answer to Mediterranean beach culture. Today it is a well-developed resort town that balances traditional Kerala fishing village character with international tourism infrastructure.
