Overview

Hyderabad is India's biryani capital — a city where Dum Pukht biryani, irani chai, and Osmania biscuits are embedded in daily life, and where the 16th-century Charminar stands at the symbolic heart of a city that was once richer than England. Founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah on the Musi River, Hyderabad was the capital of the Nizam's empire — for decades the wealthiest ruling house on earth, whose last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, was listed in TIME magazine as the world's richest person in 1937. Today the city is India's pharmaceutical and IT capital, yet the old city's bazaars, laad (bangle) markets, and mosques retain an unbroken Deccani Muslim cultural identity. Situated 710 km from Mumbai, the journey to Hyderabad via NH 48 takes roughly 11-12 hours and is one of the most popular outstation routes from the city. For a hassle-free Mumbai to Hyderabad cab journey, Miles Tours offers well-maintained sedans and SUVs with experienced drivers at transparent pricing.

History & Significance

Hyderabad was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Golconda sultanate; it passed to the Mughals in 1687 and then became the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty (Nizams) from 1724. The last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, resisted merging with India for 13 months after independence; the Indian Army's Operation Polo in September 1948 ended the standoff and Hyderabad was absorbed into India, ending 225 years of Nizam rule.

Places to Visit in Hyderabad

Charminar

Built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah to commemorate the end of a plague epidemic, the 56-metre four-tower monument houses a mosque on its upper level and is surrounded by Laad Bazaar, perfume shops, and Hyderabadi street food.

Golconda Fort

A 16th-century citadel 11 km from the city with 87 bastions, seven gates, and an extraordinary acoustic system where a hand clap at the entrance is audible at the hilltop 1.3 km away; the adjacent Qutb Shahi Tombs are an architectural masterpiece.

Qutb Shahi Tombs

A garden complex containing the mausoleums of all seven Qutb Shahi rulers in a distinctive style blending Persian, Pathan, and Hindu architecture; the largest tomb belongs to Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah himself.

Ramoji Film City

The world's largest integrated film production facility (Guinness World Records), 30 km from Hyderabad, with studio sets, themed parks, behind-the-scenes tours, and a hotel inside the complex — a full day's entertainment.

Chowmahalla Palace

The Nizam's official state palace with four courtyards, a durbar hall with Belgian crystal chandeliers, and a garage of vintage automobiles including Rolls-Royces used for the Nizam's processions — one of the finest palace museums in India.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hyderabad is approximately 710 km from Mumbai, a drive of 11-12 hours via NH 65. Flights take 1.5 hours and are the most practical option for a short trip. Overnight trains (Hussain Sagar Express, Secunderabad Express) are also convenient.
Hyderabadi dum biryani is a slow-cooked preparation sealing meat and rice in a sealed pot. Legendary restaurants include Shadab (Charminar area), Paradise (multiple branches), and Cafe Bahar. Avoid 'Hyderabadi biryani' at tourist hotels — the real version is found in the old city.
Two full days cover the essentials: Day 1 for Charminar, Laad Bazaar, Chowmahalla Palace, and biryani lunch; Day 2 for Golconda Fort, Qutb Shahi Tombs, and Ramoji Film City. Add a third day for Birla Mandir, Hussain Sagar, and Salar Jung Museum.
October to February is ideal with pleasant temperatures (20-28°C). Avoid April-June when temperatures can reach 42°C. The Deccan Festival in February and the Bonalu festival in July-August are culturally rich times to visit.
