Charminar in Hyderabad, Telangana Hyderabad — popular tourist destination in Telangana Golconda Fort in Hyderabad Scenic view of Hyderabad, Telangana Chowmahalla Palace — Mumbai to Hyderabad trip

Overview

Hyderabad is the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, 700 km southeast of Mumbai. The road journey takes 12-13 hours by AC Sedan, generally done overnight to arrive in the morning. The route goes Mumbai → Pune → Solapur → Zaheerabad → Hyderabad on NH 65 (formerly NH 9), a four-lane corridor for most of its length with a few two-lane sections in northern Karnataka and Telangana. The inter-state permit fee at the Maharashtra-Telangana border (Kagna check-post) is around 750 rupees one-way. For most travellers, flying is faster — but Mumbai-Hyderabad cab is preferred when you have 4-5 passengers and luggage (the per-head cost beats flights) or when the trip is a multi-stop drive (Solapur Pandharpur darshan, Tuljapur Bhavani temple, Akkalkot Swami Samarth — all on the route). Hyderabad itself is built around the 1591 Charminar (the city's signature four-pillar arch) and the Hussain Sagar lake (a 1562 reservoir with the 18-metre 1992 Buddha statue at its centre). Golconda Fort, 11 km west, was the Qutb Shahi capital before Hyderabad — the seven-tomb royal necropolis is one of India's most photographed Islamic complexes. Modern Hyderabad is India's pharma-and-IT capital (HITEC City, Genome Valley, Cyberabad), with Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills as the high-end residential belts and Hi-Tech City Park as the convention zone. Famous food: Hyderabadi biryani (Paradise, Bawarchi, Shadab), haleem (during Ramzan), Irani chai and Osmania biscuits. Best season is November to February; March-May is hot (40-44°C).

History & Significance

Hyderabad was founded in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Golconda sultanate; it passed to the Mughals in 1687 and then became the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty (Nizams) from 1724. The last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, resisted merging with India for 13 months after independence; the Indian Army's Operation Polo in September 1948 ended the standoff and Hyderabad was absorbed into India, ending 225 years of Nizam rule.

Golconda Fort

A 16th-century Qutb Shahi capital 11 km west of Hyderabad, with the famous trumpet-acoustic system (a hand-clap at the Fateh Darwaza is heard clearly at the 1 km-distant Bala Hisar pavilion). Best-sourced diamonds in history (Koh-i-Noor, Hope diamond, Daria-i-Noor) all traded here.

Chowmahalla Palace

The Nizam's residential palace 1750-1869, restored 2005-10. Four pavilions (chow-mahallas) around a central courtyard, with the 1872 throne hall containing the famous 19-chandelier Khilwat Mubarak hall. Vintage car collection includes the Nizam's 1911 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.

Salar Jung Museum

India's third-largest national museum with 38 galleries holding the personal collection of Mir Yusuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (Nizam's prime minister 1899-1949). The 'Veiled Rebecca' Italian marble sculpture and the double-faced wooden figure are signatures. Closed Fridays.

Hussain Sagar Lake and Buddha Statue

A 5.7 km² heart-shaped reservoir built 1562 by Sultan Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah's son-in-law Hussain Shah Wali. The 18-metre / 350-tonne monolith Buddha statue at its centre was installed 1992 — the largest single-stone Buddha in India.
