Wilson Dam and Arthur Lake in Bhandardara, Maharashtra Bhandardara — popular tourist destination in Maharashtra Umbrella Falls in Bhandardara Scenic view of Bhandardara, Maharashtra Mount Kalsubai — Mumbai to Bhandardara trip

Overview

Bhandardara is a small lakeside village in Ahmednagar district, 165 km northeast of Mumbai, set around the 1926 Wilson Dam — Maharashtra's oldest earthen dam, built by the British to harness the Pravara river for the Tata Power hydroelectric scheme. Drive time from Mumbai is 4 to 4.5 hours via Mumbai-Nashik Expressway up to Igatpuri, then NH 61 to Ghoti, and the final 25 km up the Sahyadri to Bhandardara plateau. The village sits at 750 m on the southern shore of the Arthur Lake (named after Sir Arthur Hill of GIPR), with the 1926 Wilson Dam wall, the Umbrella Falls cascading down the dam spillway, and Mount Kalsubai (1,646 m — Maharashtra's highest peak) within hiking distance. The MTDC Resort Bhandardara has the only direct lake-view accommodation; private resorts include Anandvan, Maitreyi and Yashodham. The main attractions are Wilson Dam wall walk, Arthur Lake boating, Umbrella Falls (only in monsoon — water cascades over the spillway into multiple umbrella-shaped streams), and the Randha Falls 18 km away on the Pravara river. The 1340 Ratangad Fort and the firefly festival in May-June (when thousands of bioluminescent fireflies sync their light pulses in the Bhandardara forest — a globally rare phenomenon, attracting Mumbai and Pune visitors specifically for this) are unique to this destination. Best season: June-September for waterfalls and lake fullness; May for fireflies; October-February for clear-weather treks.

The region has been an important cultural and historical centre for centuries, attracting scholars, pilgrims, and travellers from across the subcontinent. Over the years, various dynasties and rulers have left their mark on Bhandardara, contributing to its rich architectural and cultural heritage that visitors can still appreciate today.

Places to Visit in Bhandardara

Wilson Dam and Arthur Lake

A 150 m masonry-and-earth dam built 1910-1926 by the British for the Pravara hydroelectric scheme. Named after Sir Leslie Wilson, Governor of Bombay 1923-26. The reservoir, Arthur Lake, is named after GIPR Director Sir Arthur Hill. Dam wall walk and boating allowed.

Umbrella Falls

A spectacular monsoon-only phenomenon where the Wilson Dam spillway overflow falls in multiple umbrella-shaped streams from the 150 m dam wall. Best viewing July-September; the waterfall is visible from the dam wall walk and the village road. Approach the base trail at your own risk.

Mount Kalsubai

At 1,646 m, the highest peak in Maharashtra. The summit has a small Kalsubai Devi shrine; the trek takes 3-4 hours up and 2 hours down from the Bari village base camp (15 km from Bhandardara). Two iron-ladder sections near the top. Best November-February.

Randha Falls

A 170-foot waterfall on the Pravara river, 18 km from Bhandardara village. Active July-October. The viewpoint is a 200 m walk from the parking lot. Less crowded than Umbrella Falls — peaceful for photography.

Ratangad Fort

A 17th-century Maratha hill fort at 1,300 m, 20 km south of Bhandardara. Reached by a 3-hour trek from Ratanwadi village. The 'Andha Bari' (blind ladder) cave and 'Konsacha' archway are the iconic features. Pair with the Amruteshwar Mandir (12th-century Yadava Shiva temple) at Ratanwadi.

Mid-May to early June, the 3-week window when pre-monsoon humidity triggers mass synchronous firefly behaviour in the Bhandardara forests. Maharashtra Tourism organises camping packages — 2,500-4,000 rupees per head including tents, dinner and the firefly walk.
Moderate — fit beginners can complete it. 6 km one way, 1,646 m ascent. Last 200 m has 4 iron ladders (single-person width) bolted to vertical rock. Most weekend trekkers start at 4 AM to reach the summit by 7-8 AM for sunrise.
Maybe — depends on monsoon strength. In a normal year, waterfalls are active until mid-October. In a weak-monsoon year, they may stop by late September. Best is July-September for guaranteed water flow.
Yes. Private resorts include Anandvan Resort, Maitreyi Eco Resort, Yashodham Resort. All within 5 km of the lake but only MTDC has the direct lake-view. Riverside Camp at Sambharkund (15 km) is the budget tent option.
