Overview

Badrinath is one of Hinduism's holiest pilgrimage sites, home to the Badrinath Temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu at 3,133 metres on the banks of the Alaknanda River in the Garhwal Himalayas. As one of the Char Dham and one of the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnavism, the temple draws over a million pilgrims annually during its six-month opening season. The temple's vibrant painted facade, set against the snow-capped Neelkanth peak (6,597 m) and the steaming Tapt Kund hot springs, creates one of the most dramatic sacred landscapes in India. The drive from Mumbai to Badrinath covers 1700 km and typically takes around 30-32 hours via NH 48 to Delhi → NH 334 to Dehradun → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath → Badrinath, passing through scenic landscapes. History & Significance

According to tradition, Badrinath was established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 9th century when he discovered a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu (as Badrinarayan) in the Alaknanda River. The temple has been rebuilt multiple times after avalanche and earthquake damage, most recently in the 17th century. The head priest (Rawal) is traditionally a Namboodiri Brahmin from Kerala, a tradition said to have been established by Shankaracharya himself.
