Auroville was inaugurated on February 28, 1968, when youth from 124 nations placed soil from their countries into a marble urn near the banyan tree at the center of the township. Endorsed by UNESCO and the Government of India, Auroville was inspired by the philosophy of Sri Aurobindo and established by The Mother of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram as an experiment in human unity.
