Auli was used as a training ground by Adi Shankaracharya's followers in the 8th century and later by the Indian military for high-altitude warfare training. The ski resort was developed in the 1990s by the Uttarakhand government, and Auli hosted the first South Asian Winter Games skiing events. The adjacent town of Joshimath is a significant pilgrimage centre established by Adi Shankaracharya.
