Overview
Kotagiri is the oldest and quietest hill station in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, situated at an altitude of 1,793 metres, approximately 1,250 km south of Mumbai. Unlike its more famous neighbours Ooty and Coonoor, Kotagiri retains an unhurried, colonial-era atmosphere with tea plantations rolling over misty hilltops and very few tourists. The drive from Mumbai takes approximately 18 to 20 hours via NH 48 through Belgaum, Hubballi, and Mysuru, then ascending the Nilgiris through the Mettupalayam ghat road, or via NH 44 through Pune, Bengaluru, and Salem. The final approach to Kotagiri involves a scenic ghat road with 36 hairpin bends climbing through deciduous and shola forests — an unforgettable drive. Given the distance, two overnight stops are recommended — Belgaum or Bengaluru for the first night, and Mysuru for the second. Highway food ranges from Maharashtrian cuisine in the first stretch to Karnataka's dose-idli and then Tamil Nadu's filter coffee and meals approaching the Nilgiris. Kotagiri was established as a hill retreat by the British in the 1820s, predating Ooty by several years. The name comes from the Kota tribe, one of the indigenous communities of the Nilgiris, known for their pottery and music. The town is surrounded by some of the Nilgiris' finest tea estates, and the Catherine Falls — the second highest waterfall in the Nilgiris at 76 metres — is just 8 km away. The Longwood Shola Forest reserve near the town is one of the last patches of undisturbed montane evergreen forest in the Nilgiris.
