Overview

Murud is a coastal town in Raigad district, around 165 km from Mumbai and a 3 to 4 hour drive down the coast via Alibaug. The headline here is Janjira fort, an island sea fort that was never conquered, reached by sail-boat from the shore. Add a clean town beach and fresh Konkan seafood and it makes one of the easier coastal breaks from the city.

NH 48 / National Highway Maharashtra

History & Significance

Janjira fort was the stronghold of the Siddis, a community of African origin who ruled Murud-Janjira as a princely state for centuries. Built and strengthened from the fifteenth century onward on a rocky island, it withstood repeated sieges by the Marathas, Portuguese and British, and is famed as a fort that was never taken. Its impregnability made the Siddi rulers a persistent naval power along this part of the Konkan coast.

Route Highlights

  • The drive goes via Alibaug down the Konkan coast, the roads are decent though the last stretch into Murud is a narrow coastal road.
  • Janjira fort sits on an island and you reach it only by the local sail-boats from Rajapuri jetty, they leave when full, and don't run in rough seas.
  • The fort is the real reason to come, it held out against the Marathas, Portuguese and British and was never taken.
  • Murud's town beach is clean and long, good for an evening walk and horse rides.
  • It's close enough for an ambitious day trip, but one night lets you do the fort without watching the clock.
  • Boats to the fort can stop in the monsoon when the sea's rough, so October to May is the safer window for the boat ride.

Places to Visit in Murud Janjira

Janjira Fort

An island sea fort off Murud, reached by sail-boat from Rajapuri jetty. Famous for never being conquered, with massive walls, old cannons and freshwater tanks inside. The fort is the main event.

Murud Beach

A long, clean town beach lined with casuarina trees. Calm and good for an evening stroll, with horse and camel rides for kids. Less crowded than Alibaug's beaches.

Kashid Beach (on the way)

A wide white-sand beach between Alibaug and Murud, often a stop on the drive down. One of the cleaner beaches on this coast, popular for a quick halt.

Ahmedganj Palace / Nawab's Palace

The old palace of the Murud Nawabs, visible from the road on a hill overlooking the sea. It's privately held, so usually viewed from outside, but a striking sight.

Datta Mandir Hill

A small temple on a hillock near the town with a view over the coastline. A short climb that rewards with a good vantage over Murud and the sea.

Frequently Asked Questions

By the local sail-boats from Rajapuri jetty, a short way from Murud town. They run when they've gathered enough passengers, and you buy tickets at the jetty. The fort can't be reached any other way.
It's doable at 3-4 hours each way, but tight, you need time for the boat and the fort. We'd suggest leaving very early, or better, staying one night so you're not rushed at the jetty.
Not in rough weather. During the monsoon, the sea can be too choppy and the boats stop. October to May is the reliable window for the fort ride.
Yes, the route via Alibaug and Kashid hugs the coast in places and passes some nice beaches. The final approach into Murud is a narrow road, but the coastal views make up for it.
Kashid beach is the obvious one, a wide clean stretch many people pause at. Alibaug itself has its own fort and beaches if you want to make a fuller coastal day of it.
