Overview
Ooty is a serious haul from Mumbai, around 1155 km and 18 to 19 hours down through Karnataka and into the Nilgiris of Tamil Nadu. It's the old British hill station people go to for the cool climate, the tea slopes and the toy train. Given the distance, almost everyone we drive does this as part of a longer South India trip with halts, not a quick getaway.
NH 48 / National Highway Tamil NaduHistory & Significance
Ooty, properly Udhagamandalam, was developed by the British in the early 19th century as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency, prized for its cool Nilgiri climate. They planted the tea and introduced many of the European-looking institutions, gardens and the church that still mark the town. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, opened in 1908, was an engineering feat for its steep rack-and-pinion sections and is now a World Heritage Site.

Route Highlights
- This is a two-day drive each way, plain and simple. We always plan an overnight halt, often around Mysore which is roughly the last big town before the climb.
- The ascent into the Nilgiris from the Mysore-Gudalur side has a long series of hairpin bends through forest. Slow, scenic, and not for the carsick-prone without preparation.
- Part of the climb passes through Bandipur and Mudumalai forest zones, which have night traffic bans, so timing the drive matters.
- Ooty itself is cold by Indian plains standards, single digits at night in winter. Pack proper warm clothes.
- The town gets very crowded in peak summer season since the whole south escapes the heat here. Traffic in town can crawl.
- Most passengers we drive pair Ooty with Mysore and sometimes Coorg, since you're already deep south. Worth planning as a loop.
Places to Visit in Ooty
Nilgiri Mountain Railway
The UNESCO-listed toy train, the most famous Ooty experience. The Ooty-to-Coonoor section is the easy bit to do; tickets sell out, so book ahead. It's slow and that's the point.
Botanical Gardens
Laid out in the 1840s on terraced slopes, with lawns, a glasshouse and old trees. Central, easy walking, and busiest during the flower show season around May.
Ooty Lake
The man-made lake in the centre of town with boating. It's pleasant but very touristy and crowded in season, so go early if you want a calmer row.
Doddabetta Peak
The highest point in the Nilgiris at around 2637 metres, about 10 km out with a road most of the way up. There's a telescope house at the top. The view depends entirely on whether the mist clears.
Tea estates around Coonoor
The slopes around Coonoor, a bit below Ooty, are the prettier tea country with viewpoints like Dolphin's Nose. Many people find Coonoor quieter and nicer than Ooty town itself.
