Overview
Gandhinagar is Gujarat's planned state capital, built from scratch in the 1960s on the western bank of the Sabarmati River — one of India's few purpose-built capitals, modelled on Chandigarh's grid-plan concept. The city is home to the Akshardham Temple, a sprawling complex completed in 1992 by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha with intricately carved pink sandstone shrines across 23 acres — the precursor to the larger Delhi Akshardham. Gandhinagar's wide tree-lined sectors, low population density, and proximity to Ahmedabad (just 23 km) make it an easy half-day excursion. From Mumbai, Gandhinagar is approximately 540 kilometres away — a 8-9-hour drive on NH 48 that offers pleasant highway views. Planning a trip from Mumbai? Our outstation cab service to Gandhinagar includes professional drivers, AC vehicles, and no hidden charges.
NH 48 / National Highway GujaratHistory & Significance
Named after Mahatma Gandhi, Gandhinagar was planned in 1960 when Gujarat was created as a separate state from Bombay State. Construction began in 1966 following designs modelled on Chandigarh; the capital was officially moved from Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar in 1970. The city is laid out in 30 numbered sectors, with Sector 1 housing the Raj Bhavan (Governor's residence) and the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha.
