History & Significance

The Statue of Unity, unveiled in 2018, commemorates Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the leader who integrated over 500 princely states into independent India. At 182 metres it overtook earlier records to become the world's tallest statue. It sits beside the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada, a project Patel himself had championed. The surrounding Kevadia area has since been developed into a large tourism zone with gardens, a safari park and viewpoints.

Route Highlights

  • Most of the run is on the fast Vadodara-side highway, the turn-off towards Kevadia is well-signposted and the approach roads are excellent.
  • Buy the viewing-gallery ticket online in advance, the gallery inside the statue's chest sells out on weekends.
  • The whole Kevadia complex is large, internal shuttle buses move you between the statue, gardens and other attractions.
  • Allow a full day at the site itself, between the statue, the Valley of Flowers walk and the various sub-attractions there's a lot.
  • Vadodara is the practical overnight base, about 90 km out, with far more hotel choice than Kevadia.
  • Skip Mondays, the statue gallery stays closed for maintenance.

Places to Visit in Statue of Unity

Statue of Unity

The 182-metre statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with a viewing gallery near the top reached by lift. The scale is the whole point, and the gallery view over the Narmada and dam is worth the ticket.

Valley of Flowers (Bharat Van)

Landscaped flower gardens stretching along the riverside near the statue. An easy walk, especially good in the cooler months when the planting is in full bloom.

Sardar Sarovar Dam

The large Narmada dam right beside the statue, with viewpoints over the reservoir. The setting of the whole complex is built around it.

Jungle Safari (Zoological Park)

A multi-level zoo and bird park within the complex, a hit with kids. Tickets are separate and it's a good half-day on its own if you have children along.

Ekta Nursery and Cactus Garden

Themed gardens that are part of the Kevadia development. Pleasant filler stops between the bigger attractions, reachable on the internal shuttle.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the statue and gallery plus one or two of the gardens, a full day works. But the complex has grown a lot, so if you want the safari park and the other attractions too, two days is better.
Vadodara, about 90 km away, has the widest hotel choice and is an easy morning run to Kevadia. There are options closer too, but they book out and cost more.
Strongly recommended. The gallery has limited capacity and sells out on weekends and holidays. Book online before you travel so the day isn't wasted.
Private cars park at designated lots and you use the internal shuttle buses to move between attractions. The driver will park and wait while you go in.
If you want to see the world's tallest statue and have a day for the surrounding attractions, yes. It's a built-up tourism site rather than a natural spot, so set expectations accordingly.
