Overview

Ponda is the temple and spice heartland of Goa, located 30 km from Panaji in the interior of the state, where Hindu temples that survived Portuguese destruction and lush spice plantations present a side of Goa most beach tourists never see. The taluka contains Goa's most important Hindu temples — including the Shri Mangeshi, Shanta Durga, and Mahalasa Narayani temples — all relocated here from the coast during the Portuguese Inquisition. Ponda's tropical spice farms offer guided walks through plantations growing pepper, cardamom, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and cashew, complete with traditional Goan lunches. The drive from Mumbai to Ponda covers 610 km and typically takes around 10-11 hours via NH 66 (Mumbai–Goa Coastal Highway) via Mahad, Chiplun → Panaji → Ponda, passing through scenic landscapes. Reach Ponda from Mumbai in comfort with Miles Tours — choose from our range of outstation cabs including Swift Dzire, Innova, and Crysta.

History & Significance

When the Portuguese Inquisition (1560-1812) destroyed Hindu temples in the coastal talukas, Goan Hindus dismantled their temple deities and carried them inland to Ponda, which was then under the Bijapur Sultanate and later the Maratha Empire, beyond Portuguese control. The temples in Ponda today — built between the 16th and 18th centuries — represent the rescued spiritual heritage of Goan Hinduism, blending Dravidian, Mughal, and Portuguese architectural influences in a style unique to Goa.
