Overview
Ooty (Udhagamandalam), at 2,240 metres in the Nilgiri hills, was the summer capital of the Madras Presidency under British rule and remains the most beloved hill station in South India, famous for its botanical gardens, tea estates, and the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway (the toy train). The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve surrounding Ooty is one of India's biodiversity hotspots, home to Nilgiri Tahr, elephants, and the rare Indian giant squirrel, while the Toda tribal people — known for their distinctive embroidered shawls and unique barrel-vaulted temples — maintain ancestral villages on the plateau. The Government Botanical Garden and Doddabetta peak draw over 3 million visitors annually. From Mumbai, Ooty is approximately 1155 kilometres away — a 18-19-hour drive on NH 48 that offers pleasant highway views. Miles Tours & Travels provides reliable taxi service from Mumbai to Ooty at competitive rates with a flat 15% discount on one-way bookings.
NH 48 / National Highway Tamil NaduHistory & Significance
Ooty was discovered for the British by collector John Sullivan in 1819, who built the first European house on the plateau and developed it as a retreat from the Madras plains heat. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, built between 1891 and 1908 using a unique rack-and-pinion mechanism on the steep Mettupalayam to Ooty section, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of the Mountain Railways of India.
